Oh, the Places I Want to Go

I love to travel. Love, love, love to travel. I love going new places, seeing new things, learning new history, and eating new food. New to me, anyway. When I was younger, I read about James A. Michener and how he researched an area before he wrote about it. His books Centennial and Chesapeake are two of my favorite books ever, and I wanted to be just like him when I grew up.

So when I read that he would move to a location and live there for two or three years, getting to know the area, getting to know the people, the climate, understanding the weather and the culture, I thought how amazing that would be. That's what I wanted to do too!

I wanted to live for a little while in a small town on the coast of Maine and spend another few years on the west coast in Oregon. I wanted to live in California and Vermont and maybe even travel to places more exotic. Of course, I didn't factor in money or how much I might miss my family. I just knew I wanted the experience.

I've been lucky in my lifetime so far. I've traveled more than I probably should have been able to, but there are still places on my list that I long to see someday. I was looking up pictures for another project earlier and came across a few shots that stirred up that old longing. So today, in no particular order, I give you five places I want to visit.

1.  Philadelphia, PA for all the obvious reasons. Or maybe they're just obvious to me. I am a history buff, and my favorite time period is probably the American Revolution. One of my dreams is to someday write the great American novel set around the time of the Revolutionary War. One of my favorite books in the world is John Adams by David McCullough, I've had the good fortune to visit Boston and Braintree and Quincy, MA, and I've paid a few short visits to Washington, D.C. (although I still haven't been able to see anything there.) but Philadelphia has so far eluded me.

2.  Italy. Rome. Wherever.  I don't care what part of Italy I get to first, I'd just like to go. I have no particular reason for wanting to go, I just do. Okay, there's the obvious historical reason to want to visit, and it seems like the kind of place someone who loves to travel ought to go. It's the site of all the interesting stuff that happened during the Holy Roman Empire, the site of amazing architecture, art, and music. And wasn't Much Ado About Nothing filmed in Italy? Who wouldn't want to go there?

3.  Hawaii.  I've never been. I think I ought to go, although, admittedly, after living in Florida for the past six years, it seems slightly less exotic than it used to. But it's still on my list and will undoubtedly remain there. I've read a few books set there and those add to the mystique. And, of course, there have been movies, but honestly, I think the appeal of almost anyplace I'd like to visit comes from a book.

4.  France. Again, no particular reason, but it's France. Paris. The south of France. I read and loved A Year in Provence and ever since then I've wanted to ... you know ... spend a year or two in Provence. Then, of course, there's The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers and there's the food. I mean, I hear it's amazing. I'd like to find out for myself. And because having spent a long time working on my family's genealogy, I've learned that I'm related to various Kings Louis and Charlemagne, so it would be nice to visit the land of my people (as my granddaughter says.)

5.  The Holy Land. Again, the land of my people -- which is pretty much true of everyone, right? It's the land of the descendants of Abraham (both branches of the family) and claimed by Christians, as well. So much interesting history has happened here -- and continues to happen. I'd love to see it some day. I'd love to visit the temple for which the Psalms of Ascension were written, to see the Mount of Olives, the Tower of David, and the Garden of Gethsemane.

I'd love to stand on the Temple Mount and walk along the shores of the Red Sea. I'd just like to see it all, breathe it in, and gain a better understanding of the divisions that have existed between people for so many centuries.

My wish list is much too long to share the whole thing, but these are the top five on my list. Do you have one? Where in the world would you like to go?

Scrapblog

I found something today that could be very dangerous for me. It's called Scrapblog, and although I've never really considered myself the scrapbook type, I had way too much fun playing with it today. I made a couple of scrapbooks before I forced myself to stop. Actually, I could have spent a lot more time finding the best possible pictures and trimming everything just-so, but I have too much work to do on revisions for the book I'm working on, and it's my daughter's birthday dinner at my mother's house in just a few hours so I played just a little. Honest!

How about you?

Thursday Thirteen #8

Thursday Thirteen
Thirteen Things I Need to Finish Before I Leave for RWA's National Conference
1. Figure out what I'm going to wear. Yeah, I know. I can feel some of you rolling your eyes at this one, but this one is really important. We all want to look nice when we're attending a professional conference, and usually it's enough to have a new outfit or two and get your hair cut and your nails done. This year, as RWA's president, I'm going to be Front and Center for the entire conference, which makes it even more important that I have something decent to wear, since I'll be strolling across the stage and standing at the podium and appearing on the big screens in the ballroom. And since airlines are charging for two bags, and since taking three isn't even an option, I have to know what I'm planning to wear, when -- right down to shoes, jewelry, and accessories -- which is about three layers deeper than I usually go when I'm planning what to pack. So no comments or eye-rolling on the wardrobe issue. 2. Figure out what I'm going to say at the opening session, the AGM, the keynote luncheon, the awards luncheon, and anywhere else I'll be expected to say a few words. 3. Finalize invitations for the past-president's annual get-together. 4. Pick up some tissue to use when wrapping gifts for board members and staff. No, I'm not going to tell you what I got them. 5. Finish signing all of the certificates for RITA and Golden Heart finalists. 6. Try to finish the book my editor is patiently (and I do mean patiently) waiting for. It's not a good idea to let your volunteer service to a writer's organization kill your career as an author. 7. Double and triple-check my calendar to make sure I've included everywhere I'm supposed to be and when I'm supposed to be there. The invitations are starting to come in, and I don't want to miss anything! 8. Write my final letter for Romance Sells -- a quarterly publication we provide to booksellers and librarians 9. Convince Angel that I'm not going to leave forever. Already, she's looking at me with those guilt-inducing puppy-dog eyes because the suitcase is still sitting in the bedroom. She knows something is up, and she's not happy about it. 10. Send back the outfit I bought for the Awards Ceremony and then changed my mind about. Wait anxiously for the replacement outfit I've ordered to arrive. 11. Make sure Vanessa ships those board/staff member gifts from Florida to arrive in time. 12. Touch base with conference speakers and parliamentarian for the Annual General Meeting. I should have done this weeks ago. :::sigh::: 13. Everything else that I don't have space to list because 13 spaces aren't nearly enough. I need to get some pictures of Abigail and her parents to carry with me so I don't appear to be the world's worst Ooma. Write my report for board meeting, read, study, and prepare for board meeting, Get my nails done. No, don't. I can't type fast enough with nails. But my nails look like I've been scratching brick walls with them. No. No! My editors have been waiting long enough! who cares what my nails look like? I need function! And obviously the most important item on the list --- hyperventilate....a lot.

On my way...

Last night, I remembered that I started a list of things I want to do on a website called 43 Things. I started creating my list, and then I guess got stopped with about 11 out of 43 entered. In my post-deadline dementia, that place between writing frantically and not sleeping and starting the next book, I decided to play with my list. one of the things I've always wanted to do is Visit All the National Parks in the US.

So far, I’ve been to:

Acadia National Park Adams National Historical Park Arches National Park Black Canyon of the Gunnison Bryce Canyon National Park Canyonlands National Park Dinosaur National Monument Glacier National Park Grand Canyon National Park Grand Teton National Park Kenai Fjords National Park Mesa Verde National Park Minute Man National Historical Park Redwood National Park Rocky Mountain National Park Roosevelt Campobello National Park Yellowstone National Park (my favorite!!!) Yosemite National Park Zion National Park

I’ve seen the:

Big Hole National Battlefield Jefferson National Expansion Monument (St. Louis Arch) Lincoln Home National Historic Site Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument Mount Rushmore National Memorial Timpanogos Cave National Monument

I’ve been on many places along the:
