The Simple Woman’s Daybook 1/23/2010

FOR TODAY
Saturday, January 23, 2010...

Outside my window... It is dark. I can only see the reflection of lights inside the house.

I am thinking... How odd it is that sometimes the thing you think will be the worst thing ever turns out to be exactly what you need.

I am thankful for... My family. They’re incredible.

From the kitchen... I smell clam chowder simmering on the stove.

I am wearing... a T-shirt I bought at Moonlight Madness in Atlanta. I think it was from an RWA chapter in Missouri. It says “Heroes wanted … Apply Here”

I am creating... Clam chowder in the kitchen and memories with my grandchildren. Earlier today I created new content for a couple of web pages.

I am going... to find a blanket in a few minutes. My toes are cold.

I am reading... A book that came in my RITA packet. Can’t say more than that.

I am hoping... That everyone in the house stays well in the coming week and that my oldest daughter finds the job she wants.

I am hearing... A song I don’t recognize coming from my daughter’s computer.

Around the house... Are toys and clutter – signs of a busy, happy family.

One of my favorite things... the smell of fresh bread. Warm rolls will do too :)

A few plans for the rest of the week: Work, work, work. I need to get this proposal to my editor!

The 2010 To-Be-Read Challenge

2010tbr_21 I tried participating in the 2009 TBR Challenge and fell far short. I read more than 12 books in the year, but only managed one or two from my list so I'm trying it again this year.  The rules are pretty simple:
  • Pick 12 books – one for each month of the year - that you’ve been wanting to read (that have been on your “To Be Read” list) for 6 months or longer, but haven’t gotten around to.
* the challenge is to read 12 TBR books in 12 months — you can read those all in one month if you want, or one a month, or however you want to do it.
* you should have a list posted somewhere for others to see
* you CANNOT change your list after January 1st, of the current year!!!
* you can create an Alternates list of MAXIMUM 12 books, if you want, in order to have options to choose from (you can read these in place of books on your original list).
* audiobooks and e-books ARE allowed
* re-reads are NOT allowed, as they aren’t TRUE “TBRs”
* you CAN overlap with other challenges
* OPTIONAL: you can join the Yahoo! Group created for participants of the TBR Challenge, if you want to have a place to keep your list, or just to share with others about how you’re doing!
** OPTIONAL: Create a list of 12 “Alternates” (books you could substitute for your challenge books, given that a particular one doesn’t grab you at the time)
** Then, starting January 1, read one of these books from your list each month, ending December 31.
By the end of the year you should’ve knocked 12 books off of your TBR list!
I plan to read:
  1. THE ADAMS-JEFFERSON CHRONICLES: The Complete Correspondence Between Thomas Jefferson and Abigail and John Adams
  2. WHAT LOOKS LIKE CRAZY ON AN ORDINARY DAY by Pearl Cleage
  3. MARY, CALLED MAGDALENE by Margaret George
  4. SPYING IN HIGH HEELS by Gemma Halliday
  5. MAGIC HOUR by Kristin Hannah
  6. I DREAMED I MARRIED PERRY MASON by Susan Kandel
  7. DON'T TELL by Karen Rose
  8. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS by J.K. Rowling
  9. UP ISLAND by Anne Rivers Siddons
  10. A THOUSAND ACRES by Jane Smiley
  11. QUITE A YEAR FOR PLUMS by Bailey White
  12. FLAMINGO DINER by Sheryl Woods
ALTERNATES
  1. KISS RIVER by Diane Chamberlain
  2. MRS. LINCOLN, A LIFE by Catherine Clinton
  3. THE MAGIC OF ORDINARY DAYS by Ann Howard Creel
  4. FLORIDA ROADKILL by Tim Dorsey
  5. MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION by Lloyd C. Douglas
  6. ANGEL FLYING TOO CLOSE TO THE GROUND by Annie Garrett
  7. SARAH: A NOVEL by Marek Halter
  8. FIVE WOMEN by Rona Jaffe
  9. ANGRY HOUSEWIVES EATING BONBONS by Lorna Landvik
  10. CHIN UP, HONEY by Curtiss Ann Matlock
  11. THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER by Carson McCullers

So there are my lists. Wish me luck and feel free to join me!
